The roofs of Penrith proper
Penrith is the oldest built-up part of the valley and it shows in the roofing. Within a kilometre of High Street you can find inter-war cottages with original terracotta, post-war brick-and-tile, 1980s townhouses, and new apartment and infill development around the station and Jane Street. Head toward the river at Tench Reserve and the streets get leafier and the gutters fill faster. Head north toward the Penrith Lakes and the blocks open up.
That mix means there is no single Penrith roof problem. But there is a dominant one.
Mortar that has been through too many summers
Penrith Lakes holds the highest temperature ever recorded in the Sydney basin, 48.9°C on 4 January 2020, and the surface of a tile roof runs well above air temperature on an ordinary January afternoon. Rigid ridge mortar does not survive that daily expansion cycle indefinitely. It crazes, crumbles, and eventually lets wind-driven rain track straight under the cap.
Then a storm comes out across the Cumberland plain, lifts a cap whose bedding had already failed, and a ceiling stain appears a week later in a room nowhere near the actual entry point.
What we are usually called out for here
- Rebedding and repointing ridges and hips on older tile roofs
- Cracked and slipped tiles, often on roofs that have been walked by tradespeople
- Valley irons rusting under leaf litter from established street trees
- Flashing leaks around chimneys and solar penetrations
- Gutter overflow on older steel gutters that rusted from the inside
Flooding and the floodplain
Parts of Penrith sit on the Nepean floodplain. NSW SES material for the area notes that in a major flood, water would reach parts of Penrith adjoining Peach Tree and Boundary creeks, along with Emu Plains, Leonay and Regentville. Roofing does not solve a flood, but it does matter that gutters, downpipes and stormwater connections actually work during the kind of intense rain event that precedes one.
Book a free inspection
Call (02) 4705 5100 and we will come and look at it properly — on the roof and in the roof space — then put a written, itemised quote in your hands with no obligation attached.
Start with roof repairs if you have a leak, roof restoration if the whole roof looks tired, or a written inspection report if you need documentation.
